A Load Moment Indicator (L.M.I.) is a safety device used on lifting equipment. It is a cab-mounted display connected to various types of load sensors that indicate to the operator the weight being lifted.
The L.M.I. helps determine whether the lift is within the safe operating range. If the lift exceeds safe limits or if the system detects unsafe conditions, the L.M.I. can warn the operator or restrict machine functions to prevent accidents.
L.M.I. systems typically use a microprocessor to monitor load conditions. The system measures the actual load weight and compares it with the manufacturer’s rated capacity to determine if the lift is safe.
The term Load Moment (or Rated Capacity Indicator) refers to sensing—either directly or indirectly—the overturning moment acting on the equipment.
